For many people, K-pop is the reason they first became interested in Korea. Living here means concerts, music shows, pop-up stores and fan events are much closer. Here is a practical introduction to Korean fan culture so you can enjoy it confidently.

How concert ticketing usually works

  • Korean ticketing sites and apps sell most concert tickets. Some have global or English versions, but certain shows are sold only on the Korean version, which may require Korean phone verification.
  • Fan club presales are common for popular artists. Official fan club membership may give access to an earlier sale or a separate allocation.
  • Popular shows sell out in minutes. Create your account in advance, check the sale time (Korea time), and use a fast, stable connection.
  • Bring identification. Many concerts check that the ticket holder's name matches an ID at the entrance. For foreigners this is usually a passport or residence card. Check the event notice for exactly what is accepted.
  • Be careful with resale. Unofficial resale is risky: tickets can be cancelled, and scams are common. Buying only from official channels is the safest choice.

At the concert

  • Light sticks (eungwonbong, ์‘์›๋ด‰) are a big part of the experience. Official light sticks can often sync with the show's lighting through an app or Bluetooth.
  • Fan chants (eungwonbeop, ์‘์›๋ฒ•) are fixed lines fans shout during songs. Fandoms often share guides before a tour.
  • Photo and video rules differ by show. Follow the staff's instructions and the event notice.
  • Merchandise (gutjeu, ๊ตฟ์ฆˆ) booths can have long lines, and some events use online pre-orders or app queues.

Music shows and other fan events

Weekly TV music shows sometimes let fans attend recordings. Spots are often arranged through fan clubs or official fan communities, with check-in times that can be very early. Other common events include fan signings (paenssa, ํŒฌ์‹ธ), pop-up stores, and fan-organized birthday cafรฉs that decorate a cafรฉ for an idol's birthday.

Fan etiquette

  • Respect artists' privacy: do not follow them, wait at their homes or share private information.
  • Follow queue rules and staff directions at events.
  • Be kind to other fans online and offline. Fandom spaces are more fun when everyone feels welcome.

Fan words you will hear

  • ์ปด๋ฐฑ (keombaek) โ€” comeback, a new release
  • ์ตœ์•  (choeae) โ€” your favorite member (โ€œbiasโ€)
  • ๋•์งˆ (deokjil) โ€” fan activities; ๋•ํ›„ (deokhu) is a devoted fan
  • ์ž…๋• (ipdeok) โ€” becoming a fan
  • ์ง์บ  (jikkaem) โ€” fancam focused on one member
  • ์Œ๋ฐฉ (eumbang) โ€” music show
  • ์•จ๋ฒ”๊นก (aelbeom kkang) โ€” unboxing albums for random photocards

K-pop as a way to learn Korean

Lyrics, variety shows and fan communities are a fun way to practice Korean. Try reading lyrics with translations, learning a fan chant, or chatting with Korean fans who share your favorite group. Making friends through a shared interest is one of the best parts of living in Korea.
